Metal packing glands are critical to preventing leaks in pumps and valves, and simple, regular maintenance can keep them working reliably for years. Here's how to keep yours in good shape, based on practical, day-to-day practices.

 

Start with daily checks. Give the gland bolts a quick visual inspection to make sure they're tight, and wipe away any oil, grime, or corrosion on the surface. Every so often, clear out any debris or leftover process media stuck in the gland and stuffing box-this small step prevents buildup that can throw off the seal.

 

For non-fluid lubricated setups, add compatible lubricant like graphite grease once a month. Skip generic oils; use the right type for your application to avoid damaging the packing material.

 

Keep an eye on leakage during operation. A slow drip (10–20 drops per minute for liquid media) is normal, but if leaks spike, adjust the bolts evenly and gradually. Don't crank them down too hard all at once-this can cause dry friction, wear out the packing fast, or even warp the gland itself.

 

Replace the packing every 3–6 months, or sooner if it gets hard, cracked, or worn down by a third. When installing new rings, stagger the joints by 120–180 degrees to ensure a tight, even seal. While you're at it, check the shaft or sleeve for scratches, rust, or wear, and repair any damage. Aim for a surface roughness of Ra 0.8–1.6 µm for a smooth fit.

 

Finally, always use a torque wrench to tighten bolts evenly to avoid tilting the gland. When disassembling, protect the shaft and sealing surfaces, and never pry at them with hard tools. These small, careful steps will help your packing gland perform reliably, reduce downtime, and save you from costly repairs down the line.
